Technoethics

During my first year of university, I wrote a paper exploring the advancements of automation and technology and their effect on society. Here I explored the theory of Karl Marx and how if automation in technology advances, people will feel more alienated from their jobs, their lives and society, causing a decrease in well-being and livelihood. An example of this was after World War 2. In order to increase efficiency and cost-effective solutions, hospital owners introduced new technologies within the nursing profession. These new machines, equipment, and electronic monitoring devices dramatically altered the daily lives of these nurses, significantly changing their daily routines, work habits, and skills. This caused de-skilling and removal of essential skills that were previously very valuable within the nursing profession. Causing the nurses to feel very alienated from their jobs and profession. This explores the technological ethics of Over-Automation. When automation decreases the quality of life and starts affecting society and its people. This shows that it is crucial to consider workers when innovating for automation as it can dramatically impact many workers lives.
